Yttrium was first discovered in 1787 by Carl Axel Arrhenius near the town of Ytterby, Sweden. He named the discovery after the town. Johan Gadolin found yttrium’s oxide in 1789, and in 1828 Friedrich Wohler found the elemental yttrium substance. Yttrium is a key element in making phosphors for LED’s; it is also used in laser’s, electronic filters, and superconductors. Exposure to yttrium is also said to cause lung cancer. Yttrium is also used for treatments in some medical applications.
